Unlocking the Imagination: Poetic Nonfiction As a Means Toward Collective Liberation

Our imaginations are in a perpetual vice-grip, stuck in stalemate as we watch the world burn and wonder to ourselves, "What is the role of the artist?" This 10-week course is to tap into the spaces of our minds and hearts, to further deepen our understanding of what our writing can enable both politically and culturally, while simultaneously serving as a means toward our freedom as a collective.

Together, we will be reading, listening, watching and writing and discussing. The course is meant to be interactive, fun, informative, and hopefully, eye-opening. Each week we will not only be unpacking our own writing, but the writing, musings, music, and art of others in a safe, virtual space. Using poetic non-fiction as the device, students will leave with prompts, an understanding of structure and tone, an understanding of voice, and new and exciting ways to think about their essay writing, along with knowledge about the business of published writing and marketing.

Far too often, the writing process is seen as a solo effort, the artist locked away searching and longing for the language of the heart to be made real on the page. This often can make the practice seem complex and inaccessible, squeezing voices out of conversations who would otherwise thrive in a community where the dots are connected between culture, thought, and communication. This course seeks to bring us together, to utilize our writings to not only free ourselves but free each other in the process.
