On Being Policed: A BIPOC Creative Nonfiction Writing Intensive

$0.00
sold out

October 7th - November 18th | 7 PM ET - 9:00 PM ET

Tuition | $0.00

On Being Policed is a critically important and widely acclaimed 6-week writing intensive that centers the lived carceral state experiences of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and other people of color!! Join BIPOC storytellers in this virtual container centering the art of writing about our criminal convictions, arrests, stops & frisks, detentions, and/or innocent actions that still, somehow, manage to land us in the clutches of cops, prosecutors, judges, COs, POs, and more. Here, we’ll gather weekly to dissect personal essays penned by Hanif Abdurraqib, Claudia Rankine, Chris Abani, Carol Anderson, Kiese Layman, and more. We’ll learn and hone literary craft elements. We’ll perform in a public-facing reading.

On Being Policed will take place over Zoom and include closed captioning. This writing intensive is free, but space is limited and registration is required.

This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of former Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council.
